BIOTIC CONDITIONS

Rodents abundance evaluation:

low

Breeding conditions:

Oystercatcher and Ringed Plover nested in the area, while Bar-tailed Godwit occurred in flocks reaching 200 birds (on 18 July). Dunlin was common. Numbers of Arctic Terns in the colony halved in 2004 compared with 2003, dropping to 20 pairs. Nesting of terms was also delayed compared with 2003, as the first clutch was found on 18 June 2004, while chicks had appeared on 24 June in 2003. Common Gulls nested in the area, while Herring and Great Black-backed gulls bred on the near-by islands. A pair of Arctic Skuas nested in the vicinity of the colony of Arctic Terns. Common Eiders are present year round in the area, and nest on the near-by islands (two broods with 5 and 6 chicks were recorded in 2004). Numbers of Common Goldeneye were increasing during May-June. We have also seen Long-tailed Duck, Red-breasted and Common mergansers, Tufted Duck, Teal and Pintail. Observation of Common Shelduck in the area is noteworthy.
